Windsurfing Instruction

First steps

Understanding the basic positions is important for starting out.  The tack, gybe and body position will assist with steering the windsufer where you want to go.

Prior to any lessons on the water, please ensure you have:

  1. Checked the forecast for weather that is suitable
  2. Wear a PFD / Lifejacket
  3. Buddy up with someone to encourage each other and help each other learn.
  4. Wear appropriate swimwear (UV protection) and rashvests or wetsuits based on the air and water temperature.
Secure Position

This is the first step to windsurfing, it is the process of hauling the sail out of the water and be in a safe position to manouvre the board ready for sailing.

Butterfly Rescue

An important position to understand if you need to be rescued by a club powerboat or you need to paddle back to shore.

Static Turn

The static turn allows you to turn the board around 180 degrees in a safe and controlled manner.

Sailing Position

Once you are in the secure position you can move into the sailing position to move the board forward

Steering the Board

Moving the sail will allow you to change direction to where you want to go and avoid objects.

Slow Tack

The slow tack is a way to turn the board towards the wind in order to change direction

Static Gybe

The static gybe will allow you to turn the board away from the wind in order to change direction
